Tips for insulating a terracotta pizza oven

1) First of all, prepare a bearing surface for the oven structure. Place the modular concrete blocks (at least 10 cm thick) onto the surface along with sand to level them out.

2) Position the refractory terracotta cooking floor without joining the components. They only need to be put in place and straightened out.


3) Assemble your terracotta oven.
4) Grout the joints only on the outside of the oven structure using scagliola plaster or plastic cement. The upper layer of insulation must measure at least 10 cm at each side of the oven and 20/ 25 cm in the upper part.
5) Apply the ceramic fiber all over the oven structure and secure it with a large-mesh, flexible metallic wire.
OVEN BASE FINISH: As shown in the picture above, pour vermiculite until all spaces are filled (10 cm at each side of the oven and 20 cm in the upper part).
IGLOO FINISH: blend vermiculite with cement and water and spread the mixture all over the oven structure.
