Women in Terracotta

Today is 8 March, Women's Day. So let's talk about art, terracotta and a way of celebrating women through these very means of expression: the all-female Terracotta Army, recreated with craftsmanship by artist Marian Heyerdahl (Oslo, 1957).
The Terracotta Army was originally composed of thousands of statues of male warriors, symbolic protectors of the first Chinese emperor Qin Shi Huang (259 - 210 B.C.) in the afterlife, and was discovered by chance in the 1970s to be admired worldwide today with its priceless artistic and archaeological value.
Art has always celebrated the figure of woman, the undisputed muse of inspiration since the dawn of humanity, from those Palaeolithic Venuses whose shapely features exalted femininity. In this wake, Marian Heyerdahl, a Norwegian artist of our times, had the daring idea of recreating the same warriors of thousands of years ago, but changing their gender and transforming them into women, who could thus be spokesmen for female power and, at the same time, for the suffering of women in wars.
A work of art that is an installation, an ‘army of works’, exhibited for the first time in China and also arrived in Italy, in Milan, in 2010.
Women as warriors, women laughing, women suffering, pregnant women or frowning women, accompanied by their children... Women moulded with the same material that man has used for his creations since time immemorial: terracotta.
Terracotta women, then, like the WOMEN you can find or commission from Goti Terrecotte: an ancient material, an imperishable celebration of the figure of woman.
